Member of the Senedd for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, has joined the community in Goytre to welcome the new crossing on the A4042.
Following years of efforts by local County Councillor Jan Butler and the community to improve road safety on the busy trunk road, both Cllr Butler and Mr Fox were present to use the new crossing.
Cllr Butler began with a petition several years ago that amassed over 650 signatures from local residents, leading to it being debated by the Senedd. Following support by Peter Fox, former MP David Davies and others in the community, the project was given approval.
After several weeks of work, the crossing and traffic lights were finished and ready for use at the beginning of June.
Mr Fox was delighted on his visit to press the button, and lead the community over the road safely, thanks to their joint efforts and success.
Local MS for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox has said:
“After years of work by the local community and our county councillor, it’s excellent to see this crossing open and be used.
“This goes to show what happens when you work together for the common good, the result, a safer crossing in our villages.
“Thanks must be given to Cllr Butler for her efforts in delivering this crossing, and I have seen firsthand how important it is for the area.”
“Meeting today with the community, I have also taken some feedback and further concerns about the road that we must keep an eye on to ensure they don’t develop into issues. This is a new road layout, and we must ensure drivers have good visibility of the lights, and prior warning of the new system well in advance of the village.”
“I will be writing to the new Transport Minister to set these concerns out, and to ask SWTRA to monitor the area closely, and to make any changes they deem necessary.”
County Councillor for Goytre Fawr, Jan Butler added:
"This is a testament to the power of the democratic process. When I first moved to the village of Penperlleni, I quickly began to understand how difficult it was to cross the A4042.
“I began with a petition to the Senedd, and it really was the success of this petition that got the ball rolling. Without the support of the residents of Goytre, this wouldn't have happened.
“I am delighted to be able to use the crossing at last but there are still some concerns from residents about the speed limit which remains at 40mph. I will be keeping an eye on this as there is a strong feeling among residents that 30mph would be more appropriate.
“Travelling in either direction on the A4042 leading up to the crossing there are double blind bends and it's still clear standing here that some drivers don't drive appropriately according to conditions.”
