Local MS, Peter Fox, has highlighted a serious and concerning level of road traffic collisions on the A4042, following a further fatal collision on the road in his constituency.
After receiving the response to a freedom of information request to Gwent Police asking for the traffic collision data on the A4042 road, which runs from Newport to Abergavenny, Mr Fox was very concerned to see some of the data which had been provided.
The two mile stretch of road between the villages of Llanover and Llanellen has seen 21 casualties from 2020 to 2024, with 11 being classified as Serious, and 1 as Fatal. The total amount of casualties for the entire road during the same period was 184, with 3 being Fatal, 74 Serious, and 107 classified as Slight.
Mr Fox has highlighted that just under 15% of all Serious casualties on the A4042 have taken place between the villages of Llanover and Llanellen.
As a result of this data, and following several onsite visits along the busy road to discuss resident’s concerns about pedestrian safety, Mr Fox has written again to the Welsh Government to highlight these statistics, and to ask what action they are taking to progress road safety works in Monmouthshire, and for an update on Llanover, following his recent visit with SWTRA.
Peter Fox, Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport & Rural Affairs, has said:
“These statistics are certainly concerning, and will quite rightly be a cause of worry for residents. We must remember that behind every statistic that highlights a Fatal or Serious casualty, is the reality that lives have been changed forever.
“I have met several times in recent months with concerned residents in Llanover and Goytre to discuss their respective concerns, and I have written to the Welsh Government to press the issue, and will do so again.
“We know there are improvements coming to Goytre, and these need to begin quickly. Residents in Llanover and other villages are quite rightly asking where their improvements are, and I think the Welsh Government need to look to progress similar discussions there.
“I hope the Welsh Government will look at this closely, and see that safety improvements are needed in certain areas. The answer to improving safety and allaying concerns for residents and road users will be complex, but the discussions need to begin.”
