Time for the Royal Mail to deliver

Monmouth MS Peter Fox

Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has written to the Royal Mail to ask when residents near Gilwern can expect to see a replacement Post Box installed.

A Post Box in the community of Twyn Wenallt, near Gilwern, was removed in February 2025 following a defacement. Local MS, Peter Fox, wrote to the Royal Mail after being contacted by a significant number of concerned residents to relay their concerns, and to ask when the box would be reinstated.

In the response received by the Royal Mail, Mr Fox was informed the Royal Mail would endeavour to install a replacement within 12-16 weeks, with the caveat of the involvement of third parties.

As this time has now elapsed, Mr Fox has contacted the Royal Mail again to ask when residents can expect to see this vital amenity to be returned.

Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:

“Our rural communities already feel somewhat cut off from the rest of the county as it is, so when a vital amenity, such as a Post Box is removed, it makes life so much harder.

“A lot of people still rely on using a Post Box for their day to day lives, so it is vital this is returned into service as soon as possible.

“Once I heard about the issue in February from residents, I immediately sprang into action and raised it with the Royal Mail. Their response was positive, but now the time quoted has elapsed, I have written again.

“Local residents need this amenity, and the Royal Mail must deliver. I will not rest until the Post Box is back in place.”

Local resident from the area, Debbie Field, has commented:

“We are grateful to Peter for his involvement since the beginning. The Post Box is heavily relied upon by the entire community up here, and we really need it back.

“There certainly feels as if there has been a lack of support from the Royal Mail on this. It took them less than 48 hours to remove it, yet replacing it will take in excess of 16 weeks!

“It was pointed out to us that our nearest replacement Post Box was only 500m away in Maes Y Gwartha, unfortunately this is only the case if you can fly. The reality is a 2 mile trip, crossing over a busy dual carriageway.

“I am very grateful to Peter for his further action, and I look forward to seeing the Post Box hopefully returned soon.”
