Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has asked for a review of the A449 slip roads following a BBC production of ‘Crash Detectives’.

The latest episode of the TV show, which follows the excellent, but often harrowing work of Gwent Police’s Crash Investigation Team, showed their investigation into a motorcyclist and their passenger who lost control on the slip road of the A40 at Raglan when joining the A449.

Both riders hit the central reservation, with the pillion passenger being thrown onto the opposite side of the carriageway. Fortunately, both riders made a full recovery from their injuries and are now back riding.

Mr Fox has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales to ask for the South Wales Road Trunk Agent to investigate the specific set of slip roads at Raglan, and the similar pair located near Usk.

In his letter, the Monmouth MS confirmed that whilst he was of course not in a position to comment on what the cause of the crash was, the TV show clearly showed the surface condition of the slip road was certainly very poor, with a large amount of debris also present.

Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:

“First and foremost, I want to thank the work of Gwent Police in investigating this and other similar incidents so thoroughly.

“I think its an excellent initiative that through TV shows such as Crash Detectives, we as the public are able to see how these matters are looked at, and it can certainly open avenues of discussion.

“I was very pleased that both the rider and their passenger have made a recovery and are back riding.

“This episode highlighted the poor state of the slip roads joining the A40 near Raglan, and I have asked SWTRA to investigate these and the similar pair near Usk to ensure any remedial works are carried out as soon as possible.”
