Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has called on the Welsh Government and Monmouthshire County Council to take action on potholes.
Following a marked increase in reports to the Monmouth MS about the state of roads in Monmouthshire, Mr Fox has written to Monmouthshire County Council and Welsh Government to raise concerns.
Mr Fox has visited several roads recently to review them, after one resident described their local route as a ‘minefield’. The Monmouth MS has been made aware of too many examples to list, but some, such as Cymro Road in the north of the county, are causing regular damage to vehicles.
Mr Fox has seen firsthand the appalling conditions of Monmouthshire’s roads, and the potential threat to motorists. Potholes were littered across carriageways, ranging from surface level to some being dangerously deep.
Further concerns have been raised with Mr Fox about the worrying trend of new holes appearing on motorways and other trunk roads, suggesting the carriageways are equally as brittle, and recent repairs are not scratching the surface of the issue.
The Monmouth MS has confirmed that he will be raising the issue with Welsh Government and to demand that action be taken.
Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:
“Potholes are an absolute scourge for motorists, but in Wales they really do seem so much worse.
“Every single road in the county has at least one pothole, but I am receiving more and more correspondence from residents about them increasing, with some posing a real threat.
“We heard recently about someone who was knocked off their mobility scooter as a result of potholes, and countless instances of car tyres being punctures and much worse due to the condition of the road.
“I dread to think of the damage they could inflict on any vehicle, I don’t even think a lorry or tractor would escape unharmed from some of the holes in Monmouthshire.
“The A465 has recently undergone a programme of resurfacing works in 2025, but again there are reports of more potholes appearing, what are the Welsh Government doing?
“I will be writing to Welsh Government to raise this, as this cannot go on. Wales deserves better.”
