Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has marked Small Business Saturday by visiting independent businesses in Monmouth to show his support for the town’s high street.
Small Business Saturday is a nationwide campaign that supports and celebrates the UK’s over 5.4 million small businesses. Taking place on the first Saturday in December, the campaign encourages people to shop locally, and to choose independent businesses over big retail chains.
Peter Fox has long been a champion of small businesses across Monmouthshire and makes a point of shopping locally wherever possible. Each year, he visits businesses in the constituency as part of the campaign, and this year he chose Monmouth.
The visit comes after recent flooding caused by Storm Claudia, which has badly affected businesses in the town. Many have managed to remain open despite the challenges, but footfall has dropped significantly.
After visiting several businesses as part of Small Business Saturday, including Hancocks Butchers, Adrian Gaunt & Co Jewellers, Harts of Monmouth and Hair by Jones, Peter Fox wanted to share his support for shopping locally, and to relay the message that Monmouth is open for business.
To help boost trade, Monmouthshire County Council has introduced free parking in Monmouth until Christmas, making it easier for residents and visitors to support local shops.
Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:
“Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, and it’s important that people know that Monmouth is open for business.
“Every purchase makes a difference, especially after the recent flooding, and I encourage everyone to shop locally this Christmas and support the businesses that make our towns unique.
“Shopping locally isn’t just convenient; it’s an investment in our communities. Whether it’s your local butcher, bookshop, or café, these businesses rely on our support.
“Whether in Monmouth or your nearest town, shopping locally this festive season is one of the best ways to support jobs and keep our high streets thriving."
