Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has slammed the proposals by the UK Labour Government to introduce digital ID cards, and has called on Monmouthshire’s Labour MP Catherine Fookes to reject the plans.
The Prime Minister has confirmed plans for a digital ID scheme, announced with the aim of tackling illegal work, but it has been met with firm opposition by parties across the political spectrum, including several from within Labour’s own ranks.
A petition against launching digital ID cards was begun during September, and has already amassed over 2.4 million signatures.
The Conservative Party scrapped the previous Labour Party proposals to introduce ID cards by in 2010, labelling Labour’s approach to privacy as ‘the worst of all words – intrusive, ineffective and enormously expensive’.
Mr Fox has hit out at the plans and outlined his opposition to the proposals last week, stating that Labour ‘cannot be trusted’, and certainly not with our personal data, and is very concerned about where these plans could lead.
The MS has now called on Monmouthshire MP, Catherine Fookes, to join with him in rejecting the proposals to introduce digital ID cards.
Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:
“This is a complete act of desperation by the UK Labour Government, and will set a dangerous precedent. The Government have said that people will not be able to work in the UK without a digital ID card, which is absolutely preposterous.
“I have 4 types of ID in my wallet for various reasons; we do not need any more. This is simply a distraction by the UK Government to hide their failure in tackling illegal migration.
“I expect our MP, Catherine Fookes, to finally represent her constituents and stand against her leaders on this issue. If she doesn’t, and tows the party line like she has to date, then it shows her loyalties are with the Westminster bubble, and not the people of Monmouthshire.
“I am firm that ID cards should not be introduced, and will do everything in my power to fight these dystopian proposals.”
