Member of the Senedd for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, has welcomed the start of the barrier replacement works on the M48.
After the reduced speed limit and restrictions on motorists had been approaching their three year anniversary, Mr Fox contacted the new Transport Minister to ask for an update on their progress.
The MS was advised the design phase of the works had been completed, with the scheme moving to construction at the start of June via overnight closures.
Welsh Government stated the works are being delivered in phases, with the current phase scheduled for completion at the end of July.
Mr Fox further queried the 50mph limit with Welsh Government and asked firmly if this would be returned to national speed limit once the works were completed.
The Deputy Minister for Transport further confirmed the current 50mph restriction is in place as a safety measure, and once the barrier renewal scheme is completed and the new barrier is up to standards, it is expected the reduced limit will no longer be required and removed.

“I am very pleased at long last to see these works beginning as they have been on the shelf for too long.
“I know how frustrating it has been for residents and road users on the M48 to see their journey times increase, all whilst no work was going on.
“It is good construction is now ongoing, and I hope it will be completed as soon as possible, as we know there will be further delays on this road with the Severn Crossing works during the summer.
“I am grateful to the Deputy Minister for confirming that he is not aware of any plans to retain the lower limit, and I will be certain to monitor that and the road works over the coming months.”
