Member of the Senedd for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, has visited Abergavenny to discuss the issue of disabled parking.
Mr Fox met with a constituent in Tiverton Car Park in Abergavenny to see the issues caused by the removal of a number of wide access disabled spaces, which have been replaced by standard spaces.
The decision, which has been labelled “odd” considering the small amount of additional spaces that have been created in return, has been met with opposition. The spaces previously allowed for “good” access for disabled drivers, who require more room to access their vehicles, which the wider spaces provided.
Peter heard about how the reduced width was causing issues, in addition to the seemingly “poor” work to remove the prior markings, which made it unclear as to where the correct space to park now was.
The issue has previously been raised in the press, with a Monmouthshire County Council spokesperson stating, “there has been no reduction in the number of disabled parking spaces in Tiverton Place car park since 2020”, which is not necessarily the issue that is being raised.
Mr Fox confirmed he would be writing to Monmouthshire County Council to outline his concerns, to ask for the rationale behind this seemingly odd decision, and to see if the previously sized spaces could be reinstated.
Local MS for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, has said:
“Despite what Monmouthshire County Council have previously said, there has been a reduction in the number of wide access disabled spaces in the car park.
“The work has seen several of these spaces removed, and replaced by a few extra regular bays, which doesn’t seem to make much sense to me at all, as its causing significant inconvenience for users.
“I will write to Monmouthshire County Council to gain some clarity on this issue, and to ask for the wider spaces to be reinstated.”
