Local MS, Peter Fox, met recently with the representatives of Network Rail and Transport for Wales in Abergavenny, to see the exciting new footbridge being installed at the station.
During the visit, Peter was given a tour of the station and work site, that has seen a new accessible footbridge installed by Network Rail and their contractor, Centregreat. The work is now nearing completion, and is set to be finished in April, before the bridge is opened in May.
The bridge, which has been called for by local councillors, politicians and the community has been heralded as a ‘major milestone’ in improving accessibility for all passengers in Abergavenny.
Peter Fox, Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport & Rural Affairs, has said:
“I am very grateful to Network Rail and Transport for Wales for hosting me in Abergavenny.”
“I know how much this bridge has been talked about and requested for years, so it is great to see it nearing completion. A special mention must be given to Pen-Y-Fal County Councillor, Maureen Powell, who has been one of the most vocal in securing this project.”
“This new bridge, which is a unique structure in the UK, will go a long way in improving accessibility for all passengers in using the station. Passengers will now have step-free access between the two platforms for the first time.”
“Its exciting to see projects such as this coming to fruition, and I am looking forward to seeing the bridge opened soon.”
Theo Smith, Senior Portfolio Manager at Network Rail has said:
“We are now in the final stages of the project at Abergavenny. It’s great to see the collaborative work between Transport for Wales, Network Rail, Centregreat and the Department for Transport, which has brought us to this position.”
“This is another station on the Marches line (Ludlow, Pontypool and New Inn, and Cwmbran) which will be fully accessible for passengers, and a lifeline for some who travel on our network.”
“We will now continue to complete the work around the station while the lifts are tested, before we can open the new accessible footbridge to the public. When it opens, Abergavenny will be a real jewel in the crown for our Wales and Borders route in terms of design and accessibility.”
Rhys Jehu, Station Manager at Transport for Wales has commented:
“It was a pleasure to welcome Peter Fox MS to Abergavenny railway station."
"Abergavenny is a hugely important station on the Transport for Wales network, connecting to Newport and Cardiff, along with services towards North Wales, Hereford and Manchester. Transport for Wales is committed to improving accessibility at stations across the Wales and Borders network, and the new bridge at Abergavenny demonstrates this ongoing commitment with our partners at Network Rail."
"As part of TfW’s £800million investment in brand new rolling stock, passengers at Abergavenny now have much improved rail connectivity and accessibility, along with a vastly improved onboard customer experience on a fleet of brand-new trains."
