Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has welcomed the announcement that funding has been made available to support the Mon and Brecon Canal.
The Welsh Government will provide cover for up to £400,000 every year, for the next five years, whilst the Canal and River Trust will also contribute up to £100,000 annually.
This will secure the future of the canal whilst discussions with other partners continue to secure future contributions over the long-term.
Mr Fox has been vocal in his support for the Mon and Brecon Canal, joining with supporters on the Senedd steps over the summer, meeting with stakeholders, and raising the issue at every opportunity with the Welsh Government.
The Monmouth MS has welcomed the news, that will secure the future of this environmental and economic asset for the foreseeable future.
Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:
“It is excellent to hear that funding has been made available to support this vital waterway.
“I have continuously raised this in the Senedd in 2025, so I am glad to see the Welsh Government have listened to concerns and have decided to step in.
“The joint working from myself and local councillors has once again shown the power of collective effort.”
“Such an asset, and a jewel in our crown should never have been at such a risk, and I know how much of a relief it will be for businesses and users of the canal.
“I know the Canal and River Trust have several events planned over the coming weeks to mark the canal’s 225th anniversary, and I am sure these events will have an added air of joy following this news. I look forward to joining them in Gilwern.”
Jan Butler, County Councillor for Goytre has added:
“I’m delighted to hear the news today from Welsh Government that further funding has been found to secure the future of the Mon & Brecon canal.
“It’s really encouraging to see that Canal and River Trust, Welsh Water, NRW, the five local authorities and BBNPA have come together to find a long-term solution.
“This is welcome news for businesses, residents, and all canal users alike. I would like to pay tribute again to all those who signed my petition that set this chain of events in motion. Thank you."
