Sir Fynwy Torfaen MS, Peter Fox, has raised serious concerns following the temporary closure of a Morrisons store in Cwmbran after inspectors identified significant hygiene and safety failings.
In response, Mr Fox has written to Morrisons to request urgent assurance this was an isolated incident and to ensure necessary steps have been taken to prevent any repeat of the incident.
The MS emphasised that while the swift intervention by TCBC was welcome, the situation should never have been allowed to deteriorate to this point in the first place.
Mr Fox stressed that communities across the region rely heavily on well run supermarkets, and that public confidence depends on consistent, transparent, and high quality standards being maintained at all times.
Peter Fox, Conservative Member of the Senedd for Sir Fynwy Torfaen said:
“What happened at this store is deeply concerning, not only because of the immediate risks but because it signals a breakdown in the basic safeguards customers should be able to trust.
“I have written to Morrisons to make clear that this cannot be dismissed as an isolated lapse.
“People in our constituency depend on these stores every day, and they deserve absolute confidence that the food they buy is handled safely and responsibly.
“Morrisons must now demonstrate that lessons have been learned, that oversight will be tightened, and that other stores in the area, including Abergavenny, are fully protected from similar failings.
“Customers expect better, and they have every right to do so.”
