Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has met with the South Wales Road Trunk Agent (SWTRA) and Transport for Wales (TfW) to discuss congestion in Chepstow.
Chepstow residents have been plagued by daily congestion for a significant amount of time, with the problems worsening in the area due to significant roadworks on the M48.
Mr Fox has raised the issue of improvements to Highbeech roundabout in the Senedd consistently since being elected, and requested a meeting with the Cabinet Secretary for Transport to discuss it on site.
Whilst the Cabinet Secretary was unable to attend, Mr Fox was pleased to host officials from SWTRA and TfW.
The meeting focused on practical steps to improve traffic flow and reduce frustration for residents and road users. Whilst a number of options are being looked at, the message was clear, Chepstow needs solutions.
The Monmouth MS has assured residents repeatedly that he will continue to push for a long-solution to ease congestion once and for all in the area.
Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:
“Traffic in Chepstow has been worsening for a long time, and residents are quite rightly fed up.
“From the daily issues at Highbeech, to the reduced speed limits on the M48, the HGV restrictions on the M48 Severn Crossing and also heavy congestion throughout the town, who can blame them for being frustrated.
“The answer to a lot of these issues is a Chepstow by-pass, but unfortunately the Welsh Labour Government and Labour controlled local authority seem to have no appetite to explore this option.
“I today discussed a number of possible solutions to ease the situation in the area, and I will continue to champion this cause in the Senedd until that solution is found.”
