Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has called on the Welsh Government to outline exactly what money is being spent on Cardiff Airport.

In his recent question to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Mr Fox highlighted the recent announcement by Welsh Government to award Cardiff Airport an additional £206m of taxpayers money will bring the total spend to £400m.

Peter expressed his concern around the distinct lack of clarity as to how the money is being spent, and what metrics the Welsh Government are using to assess if its being effectively used.

The Monmouth MS asked the Cabinet Secretary to outline exactly what the money is being spent on at Cardiff Airport, and when would the Welsh public see an end to the continuous funding of the airport by the Government.

Local MS for Monmouth, Peter Fox, has said:

“There simply does not seem to be a long term strategy by the Welsh Labour Government for this airport. It has been in public ownership for over 12 years, but have things really changed or improved?

“We constantly see huge sums of taxpayers money being thrown at it, without any clear direction or accountability for how it is spent.

“We have been clear, the Government cannot run it effectively and it should be down to a private company to take the reigns to turn it into a profitable enterprise.

“Cardiff Airport should be put back into the private sector, and the Welsh Conservative Party would work to improve it to make that a reality.

“I will continue to put the Government to task over this to ensure the Airport is managed correctly, but also ensuring as little tax payer money is used as possible, and what is used is being spent effectively.”
