Monmouth MS Peter Fox

Local MS, Peter Fox, has written to Monmouthshire MP, Catherine Fookes, calling for her to support the Chepstow by-pass.

Following a recent article by the Monmouthshire MP, Mr Fox was “surprised” to hear that Ms Fookes was calling for a third crossing over the River Severn, instead of backing longstanding calls by the Welsh Conservatives for a Chepstow by-pass.

In his correspondence, Mr Fox highlighted that Welsh Labour have cancelled a number of major road building projects in Wales, including the M4 relief road and the Chepstow by-pass, and several others across Wales.

An offer was made by Peter to the Monmouthshire MP to put the case forward to the Welsh Government in his Shadow Cabinet role, which covers Transport, but stated this case would be strengthened by the support of the Member of Parliament.

Peter Fox, Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport & Rural Affairs, has said:

“It was very surprising to see our MP calling for a third Severn Crossing, which I have to say is quite a dramatic shift in the position of Labour in Wales.

“I have long been an advocate for improvements to our roads in Wales, and a by-pass in Chepstow would be the best way to alleviate pressure on the town, and provide some support to the embattled Highbeech roundabout.

“A by-pass has been something the Welsh Conservative Party have been advocating for many years, and is something that we must see delivered. I hope that our MP will throw her support behind this project in order for us to be able to provide real improvement for our residents.

“I have written to Catherine to put this case forward, and to ask if she will give me her support in calling for a Chepstow by-pass.”
